The Tony-winning Broadway production of Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage is getting a new quartet of stars. The show, directed by Matthew Warchus, will feature Dylan Baker, Jeff Daniels, Lucy Liu and Janet McTeer beginning on March 2 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
Daniels and McTeer both have a history with the play. Daniels, who will replace Ken Stott in the role of Michael (originated on Broadway by James Gandolfini), was Tony-nominated for originating the role of Alan in the Broadway production. McTeer, who will replace Christine Lahti in the role of Veronica (previously played by Tony winner Marcia Gay Harden) originated the part in the London premiere of the play.
Baker, who will replace Jimmy Smits in the role of Alan in the show, has many Broadway credits, including November, Mauritius, La Bete (Tony and Drama Desk nominations) and Eastern Standard. In addition to a long list of off-Broadway credits, Baker has appeared in a number of films such as The Matador, Across the Universe, The Hunting Party, Fido, Spider-Man 2 and 3, Hide and Seek, Head of State, Road to Perdition, Changing Lanes, Along Came a Spider, Thirteen Days, Happiness, Disclosure, Delirious, Planes, Trains & Automobiles and The Long Walk Home.
In addition to starring in God of Carnage, Daniels appeared on Broadway in Fifth of July (Drama Desk Award), The Golden Age and Redwood Curtain. His off-Broadway work includes Johnny Got His Gun, Lemon Sky and Blackbird. Daniels, who is the founder and executive director of Michigan’s Purple Rose Theatre Company as well as a playwright, singer and songwriter, is best known for appearing in over 50 films, including The Squid And The Whale, Something Wild, The Purple Rose Of Cairo, Gettysburg, Pleasantville, Terms Of Endearment, The Hours, Dumb And Dumber, Fly Away Home and The Answer Man.
Liu will make her Broadway debut as Annette in God of Carnage, replacing Annie Potts in the part. She is known for her many film roles, including Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Charlie’s Angels, Chicago, Kung Foo Panda, Shanghai Noon and Jerry Maguire. Her television credits include Dirty Sexy Money, Cashmere Mafia, Ugly Betty, Ally McBeal and NYPD Blue.
Tony winner McTeer most recently starred on Broadway in Mary Stuart, in a role she played at London’s Donmar Warehouse and in the West End and for which she was nominated for a Tony Award. Her many theater credits includeDuchess of Malfi, Uncle Vanya, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Worlds Apart, The Storm, As You Like It; Taming of the Shrew, A Doll’s House (for which she won the 1997 Best Actress in a Play Tony Award), Simpatico, The Grace of Mary, Greenland and Much Ado About Nothing. Her film credits include Tumbleweeds (for which she won a Golden Globe Award and garnered an Oscar nomination), Songcatcher, The King Is Alive, The Intended, Tideland and As You Like It.
The current stars of God of Carnage will play their final performance on February 28.
